Paul Gavarni [pseudonym of Hippolyte-Guillaume-Sulpice Chevalier] French realist lithographer and painter, illustrator, watercolourist and caricaturist and contemporary of Honoré Daumier. A renowned social realist whose work typically demonstrates an accomplished accuracy of observation allied to an often biting satirical commentary while retaining a affectionate empathy for the lower orders of society. His engravings featured prominently in "Charivari", "Illustration", and the "Illustrated London News"

This extremely detailed engraving mainly shows boats in the harbor with the city in the distance. 'Archangel, though the oldest, is not the least important mart of commerce, even in the present day. The English have traded to this port since the year 1553; and of late years, the Americans strive to divide the trade with them. Archangel is most conveniently situated for receiving, by water communication, the articles of exportation from the eastern and middle parts of European Russia; and for transporting, by the same easy communication, the vast quantities of coffee, cotton, sugar, &c. consumed in the interior of the empire. The number of ships which annually visit this most northern port is about 250. The imports consist of coffee, cotton and cotton-yarn, indigo, cochineal, &c.: the exports are, flax, hemp, tallow, sheetings, and wood.' Pinkerton 1833. 6 .5 x 5 inches. £20
