Bombardment of Odessa.22 April, 1854 the boats of the fleet going to the French steamer Vauban assist in extinguishing the fire caused by the red hot shot fired from the Russian batteries. 'As this town has been declared a free port, it will naturally become a principal mart for European and Asiatic wares, both raw and manufactured, for the South of Russia. In 1803, the customs received are said not to have amounted to more than 30,000 roubles; and now they are upwards of one million. The principal article of export is corn; varying in quantity, according to the produce of the crops in Egypt, and in the countries bordering on the Mediterranean. Interior of the Great Redan. A view of a portion of the interior. The Redan and was shaped with flanking parapets extending from each extremity. Each side was 225 ft. in length, and mounted nine 68 pounders, there was also one 68 pounder in the angle, and five in each of the flanking parapets, in all 29 guns. The exterior parapets was averaged from 30 to 35 ft. in width along the entire front, and was from 8 to 10 ft. in height, and was formed of sandbags, gabions, fascines, new trees and poles tied together in bundles.
